  8. Program:  Special Effects 1.3 [Upgrade / Patch to Version 1.2]

  10. Purpose:  Display 3D Special Effects by setting numerous properties.
  11.           Effects include:  Fireworks, Starfield, B-Spline Warp,
  12.           B-Spline Sparklers and Gravity Wells.  Properties can be
  13.           saved as Templates for later use or exchanged with other
  14.           users of the Special Effects product.  You can also use
  15.           the product as your Screen Saver.  Notes appear below.

  17. Status:   This is a Freeware product.
  18.           You may distribute it without cost.
  19.           Please read the License Agreement during the Install process.

  31. Installation Notes:
  32.  
  33. You can complete the installation of the Special Effects product by
  34. following these steps:
  35.  
  36. 1.  Locate the SpfxV13.exe file.  It should be in the same directory
  37.     as this Text file.
  38.  
  39. 2.  Double-click the SpfxV13.exe file.  This starts a typical Windows
  40.     application installation process.  Files will be installed into
  41.     your Windows directory as well as the destination directory that
  42.     you specify during the installation process.
  43.  
  44. 3.  Click the appropriate buttons as presented on the installation
  45.     dialogs.
  46.

  49. Operation Notes:
  50.  
  51. 1.  Once the installation is complete, you can run Special Effects:
  52.     -  Click the Windows Start button.
  53.     -  Click the Programs icon.
  54.     -  Click the Special Effects 1.3 menu item.
  55.     -  Click the Special Effects 1.3 sub-menu item.
  56.  
  57. 2.  You should see the display clear to a black background with 
  58.     fireworks launching and exploding.  You have a few options
  59.     available during the Effects:
  60.     -  Press the Escape key to end the application.
  61.     -  Right-click the screen to display a popup menu.
  62.     -  Press the Spacebar (or other key) to display the Special Effects
  63.        Properties dialog.  From this dialog, you can change several
  64.        variables including:  number of shells, sparks per shell, etc.
  65.        Context sensitive help is available.  Click the question mark icon
  66.        located in the upper-right corner of the dialog.  Then, click on a
  67.        field of interest.  A help window will popup.  You can also get to
  68.        the Help Index from the Help main menu.

  70. 3.  If you wish to use the Special Effects product as your Screen Saver:
  71.     -  Copy both the "Special Effects 13.scr" and the "SPFX.HLP" files 
  72.        into your \Windows\System directory.
  73.     -  Right-click on the Windows Desktop.
  74.     -  Select the Properties menu.
  75.     -  Select the Screen Saver tab from the Display Properties dialog.
  76.     -  Select "Special Effects 13" from the Screen Saver dropdown.
  77.     -  Specify the Wait time in minutes.
  78.     -  Select the OK button.

  82. General Notes:
  83.  
  84. 1.  The application has been tested on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.
  85.  
  86. 2.  The application does not start correctly as a Screen Saver on
  87.     Windows NT 4.0.  I will be working to remedy this.
  88.  
  89. 3.  Password protection is not included in this release.
  90.  
  91. 4.  The Effects look best when displayed with the High Color Setting.
  92.     To change your Windows Color Settings:
  93.     -  Right-click on the Windows Desktop.
  94.     -  Select the Properties menu.
  95.     -  Select the Settings tab.
  96.     -  Select "High Color (16 bit)" from the Color Palette dropdown.
  97.        If High Color is not available, 256 colors will due, but you're
  98.        really missing out on the high quality effects provided in the
  99.        High Color mode.  Consider purchasing new display hardware.

  111.     release due to an issue encountered by many people who downloaded 
  112.     the product.  One or more DLLs were not copied during the install
  113.     process; hence, the product would not operate.  The required DLLs
  114.     and proper versions are included in this release.

  117.     -  Sparklers
  118.     -  Rings
  119.     -  Twisters

  121. -   Gravity Well performance has been improved by approx. 25%.

  123. -   Overall display performance has been improved, slightly.

  127. -   An advanced option is available to resize the Display Window.
  128.     This can be useful if you wish to capture screen snapshots.

  130. -   Press F5 to Refresh the screen while effects are being displayed.

  132. -   The online Help has been updated as appropriate.

  134. -   The Windows Screen Saver Preview window is filled when you select
  135.     the Special Effects product from the Saver list.

  137. -   The Icon for the product has been changed.

  143.     It made its appearance on the Internet in late January of 1998.
